Time Slows in the French Village of Valbonne
France has always been a favourite holiday destination, and regular holidays to the South of France during my childhood always brings back fond memories of quaint villages full of character and some of the best cakes a child could wish for!
But just where are the best locations in the South of France, and what can you expect from the region?
Valbonne is a small village near Nice in the southeast of France, a beautiful 16th century village laid out in a grid pattern with two main avenues and ten streets crossing ten other streets with the focal point a large square in the centre which is surrounded by restaurants, shops and antique dealers.
The cobbled streets are line with pastel shuttered houses and at night, the soft yellow lighting gives the village an evening glow which creates an amazingly earthy, cosy feel to the village.
The village is close to the ultra-high class city of Cannes, hangout of the rich and famous and location of the Cannes Film Festival – one of the oldest and most prestigious film festivals.
Within driving distance is the town of Grasse, the centre of the French perfume industry and also the World’s perfume capital.
A little further to the northwest, but still within driving distance is the Verdon Gorge, a spectacular river canyon and the world’s second largest gorge which was carved out by the Verdon River, which was named on account of its distinctive turquoise-green colour.
The area is absolutely stunning and because of the high sides of the gorge, which reaches up to 700 metres in certain parts, the region is very popular among rock climbers.
