Must See Johnny Depp Movies – Coming to your Satellite TV (Part 1)

Johnny Depp has been entertaining cable and satellite TV viewers for over a decade with his brilliance on the screen. It’s hard to believe that Johnny Depp moved to Hollywood with no interest in making movies. He dropped out of high school and moved out west with his rock and roll band, “The Kids”. One of his good friends, fellow actor Nicholas Cage convinced Depp to take more of an interest in performance art, and Johnny Depp has never looked back. Today is widely regarded as the most versatile actor of his generation. He blew away audiences with his great performance as the mysterious young man with scissors for hands in “Edward Scissorhands” and then followed up by portraying former FBI agent Donnie Brasco across Al Pacino in “Donnie Brasco“. There have been several other terrific performances but we will start with these.
“Edward Scissorhands” was an instant Tim Burton classic and began a beautiful professional and personal friendship between Burton and Depp. They have gone on to do several movies together including “Alice in Wonderland” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. The movie is about a young girl, Winona Ryder, living in a world of routine and mundane life. Senseless gossip and cold beers keep people occupied. No excitement really happens in her small town. That is until her mother, a door to door makeup saleswoman, wonders up to an old house at the end of the town in search of customers. What she finds is Edward, played by Johnny Depp, a boy with scissors for hands. She takes pity on the poor lonely boy and brings him back to her home in the little town. It doesn’t take long before Edward is a hit with the community, however, as well all know, it is our differences that drive us apart. The townspeople mistakenly believe that Edward hurt a young neighborhood boy. They decide that enough is enough and drive him back to his dark, lonely chateau. This movie really is Tim Burton’s first real masterpiece. He combines elegance, humor and the cruelty of humanity all within a single film. This film is for anyone with an imagination; after all it is a Tim Burton film. However, it served as Johnny Depp’s first showcase of his amazing talents.
Johnny Depp portrayal of former FBI agent Donald Brasco was a fantastic performance. Depp really brought out the incredible conflict that came from Brasco living and working with mob for so many years. In the film, Brasco is sent to infiltrate the mob; however, after years of working undercover, he begins to forget which side he is on. The toll of living a double life has a significant toll on Brasco and his family, especially his wife, played brilliantly by Anne Heche. Movie-goers and satellite TV viewers will always remember Depp’s famous line: “I’m not becoming like them, I am them,” which was a response after Heche accused him of slowly becoming a mobster.
What separates Depp from other actors is his ability to take on a number of roles. He displays his brilliance in several different forms. Don’t miss either of these great movies when they come to your satellite TV!
